They had long, crooked, and hooked beaks, suitable for eating fruits and seeds. Although the actual weight of a healthy adult is unknown, they are supposed to have weighed up to 23kg and would have had a height of a metre (around three feet). Like many island-evolved creatures, they had grown to huge sizes. These birds, descended from pigeons, could not fly as their breast bones would not be able to support the strong muscles needed for flight. They lived on Mauritius and were not seen after 1681. The only verified facts about dodos are these: At the time this Entry was written, scientists were not able to recombine the DNA fragments for an attempt to reconstruct the genetic material. There was an Asian pigeon from which the Dodo and Nicobar diverged about 42 million years ago. The fragmented DNA strings showed a close relation to the Nicobar pigeon ( Caloenas nicobarica). Researchers have extracted DNA from the remains of a Dodo to find out where the bird came from. She would use her large beak to defend herself and her chick. The female dodo laid a single, big egg hidden deep in the forest. The nests in which they laid their eggs were just clearings on the ground that were covered with grass. Dodos seemed to eat stones and rocks as well, and perhaps some fruits de mer 5. With their specialised long, crooked, and hooked beak, they ate fruits, seeds or nuts. If not eaten, dodos were just happy running or staggering around their island 4. What else to serve these hungry, hardworking sailors? Give the remainder (probably most of the animal) to the dogs. Instead of only eating the flesh, you can also make a nice soup with the boiling water. Keep a few toothpicks to clean your teeth after every bite. Serve with some fruits ( mango) to make it taste like something. Then use a sharp knife to get some of the meat from the bones. Put it in a water-filled pan and let it boil for a day - or two for older birds. How to Prepare a Dodo for Dinner Trying to find the perfect recipe we killed the last bird. These sailors and colonists were amused by the friendly, easy-to-catch birds and slaughtered them for food. The islands were on the downwind track of their trade routes. The birds first encountered humanity with the arrival of Portuguese sailors and Dutch colonisers in the 16th Century AD. Dodos evolved on these islands from a flying bird to the friendly, walking bird that the first human explorers found. The current scientific name classification is Raphus cucullatus 3.ĭodos lived on Mauritius, a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean just east of Madagascar, for quite possibly millions of years. The original Latin name given by Carl Linnaeus 1 was Didus ineptus. Doudo or Doudou: foolish and simple, simpleton (as the Portuguese and Spanish visitors called them).Walgvogel or Walghvogel: nauseating bird (these are all Dutch- and German-based names).Dodors: from dot-ors, meaning tuft of feathers-tail.The bird was known by the common name 'Dodo', plural either 'Dodos' or 'Dodoes', alternative name 'Dronte'. This is a sad story let's not let it happen again. We never found out what the bird was good for, as in our attempts to exploit them we managed to kill them all. One of the creatures they found was the Dodo. In the age of exploration man discovered wonderful creatures on every beach on which he landed.
